Current and future trends in higher education – EN

Discover current and future educational trends and the need to have the right technology to interconnect your school community.

The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed the world we live in and accelerated digitalization. It has created a new environment in which technology has become a tool for both the present and the future, fostering an increasingly interconnected community.

This need has permeated all levels and sectors, including, of course, the education sector.

This context shapes current and future trends in higher education that universities, business schools, and other higher education institutions must consider. We will review some of these trends below.

5 trends for higher education

1. Technology as the central focus

Technology is essential for the digitalization of the education sector digitalization of the education sector. It is also highly effective in generating student engagement. It’s part of their daily lives, and for this reason, they don’t understand why it isn’t present in the day-to-day operations of educational institutions. This opportunity cannot be missed.

But in this new context, it’s no longer enough to use technology simply to access a virtual campus for academic activities. Technology must serve both students and institutions, facilitating their daily lives, keeping them better informed, and improving their connection with both the institution and other members of the educational community.

2. Place the student at the center

Students are demanding a more prominent role. Without them, your university, business school, or educational institution would be meaningless. This prominence means placing them at the heart of the process and addressing their needs:

  • Connection: They want to feel involved in the institution, connected to it and to other members of the community. They want to decide the level of participation they want as active members of the community, beyond just classes.
  • Support: They want to feel supported and backed by the institution. They want to know that their needs are being met and that they have someone to turn to when they need help. This support should extend beyond academics.
  • Well-being: Mental health is a key factor, and the university undoubtedly plays a role in it. Therefore, ensuring student well-being and understanding their state to contribute to its improvement is a reality that must be addressed today and implemented if you aren’t already doing so.
  •

In this way, universities and higher education institutions must apply a student-centric approach across all departments in their daily operations.

3. Personalization

The need for personalization is also a global trend and, naturally, it also involves the education sector.

Students are demanding, and will increasingly demand, more personalized treatment and communication. They want to be able to control what information they receive, what information interests them, and thus be able to identify what is relevant to them, avoiding the current information overload.

Furthermore, this personalization will also be a demand that will impact studies and their structure. Instead of designing curricula with the current traditional courses, institutions will need to design learning experiences adapted to the needs and interests of each student.

Your institution may be more or less far from this point now, but without a doubt, the need for personalization will eventually affect the current structure of studies to a greater or lesser degree.

4. New formats

The lockdown prompted the emergence of new educational formats. This was a necessary and rapid emergence and implementation for all those institutions with purely in-person educational models.

But in this new context, traditional models have been disrupted, and new educational formats, such as hybrid learning, have become established and are now widespread this academic year. And this is just the beginning, as new formats and new learning experiences, distinct from the traditional ones, will follow.

More collaborative and participatory classrooms, where motivating and engaging students will be key, and where gamification can be a good option. And where virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence (AI), or even the metaverse will eventually find their place.

5. Continuing education

The latest trend presents a significant opportunity that the sector must seize and capitalize on, given the threat of emerging and consolidating new competitors. The rise of continuing education is a reality that’s here to stay.

The rapid pace of change in the job market increasingly requires, and will continue to require, ongoing training for professionals to stay current and specialize.

This means that opportunities to attrack students are expanding more than ever, generating new target audiences and, of course, new academic offerings from universities, business schools, and educational institutions.
