Promoting the emotional well-being of students: Building a comprehensive support environment

Educational institutions must offer comprehensive support services to ensure the emotional well-being of students, addressing their diverse needs beyond academic ones.

In the educational sphere, students’ emotional well-being is of vital importance. The role of the educational institution should not be limited to providing academic knowledge, but should also include cultivating a healthy environment that promotes personal growth and emotional development.

For this reason, it is essential that educational institutions offer a wide range of student support services that address their diverse needs in order to build a comprehensive support environment: academic, emotional, mental, inclusive, and safe.

This environment will benefit both the student and the educational institution, improving the experience for both parties. This is an urgent challenge for educational institutions.

Below, we present various student support services:

1. Academic guidance and support: Building a path to success

Having access to academic guidance and support services is essential for student well-being. This service provides students with the necessary support to face academic challenges and set realistic goals, contributing to a more positive and rewarding educational experience.

Academic advisors will allow you to offer personalized guidance to students on subject selection, course planning, and the development of effective study skills, among other things.

Furthermore, they will allow you to monitor students’ academic performance and identify potential cases of school dropout or learning difficulties.

And of course, these guidance sessions will allow you to share strategies with students for managing stress and improving academic performance.

2. Emotional support: Strengthening the individual

Emotional support is essential for promoting student well-being.

Educational institutions should have trained professionals, such as psychologists, coaches, or student counselors, who provide a safe and confidential space for students to express their concerns and emotions.

These professionals can help students manage stress, cope with anxiety, and develop skills that enable them to deal with their challenges.

This emotional support can also be offered in group activities such as workshops or sessions that focus on self-awareness, empathy, developing healthy relationships, and stress management, among other topics.

3. Mental health services: Prioritizing comprehensive well-being

This service is related to the previous one, as emotional and mental well-being can be linked. They can be addressed by the same service within the school if it’s not desired to separate them into two separate services.

However, mental health should also be a key focus of the school’s approach to student well-being.

Mental health services in schools must be available and accessible to those who need them. And students should know that this service is available to them.

Individual sessions, group sessions, mental health prevention and promotion programs can be offered, as well as the involvement of external professionals when necessary to conduct sessions and workshops.

Because prioritizing mental health creates a supportive environment that allows students to face challenges with greater confidence and resilience.

4. Gender equality point: Promoting inclusion and diversity

Schools should establish a Gender Equality Point to promote and disseminate equity, inclusion, and diversity. And, of course, they must be consistent in promoting these values through their daily actions and activities.

This space can offer resources, workshops, and activities related to gender equality, the prevention of gender-based violence, and the promotion of diversity.

Furthermore, it should serve as a safe space where students can discuss and address gender issues, receive support and guidance, and participate in creating an inclusive and respectful environment. And, of course, it should be a place to report any issues if necessary.

This Gender Equality Point can be complemented by a school-based Gender Equality Association responsible for promoting and disseminating all these actions and activities.

5. Harassment reporting point: Ensuring a safe environment

The fight against bullying or any other type of harassment is fundamental to the overall well-being of students. Schools must embrace their role and offer a clear and effective reporting point where students can report any form of harassment, intimidation, or violence.

The bullying reporting point should focus on offering support to victims and implementing measures to prevent and address these situations quickly and efficiently.

This will create a safe and respectful environment in the school and foster trust, self-esteem, and healthy emotional development within the community.

Ultimately, promoting the overall well-being of students is a shared responsibility of the entire community, with the school playing a key role.

By offering comprehensive support services that promote students’ emotional well-being, schools:

  • Contribute to building a healthy and conducive environment for growth and development.
  • Help students reach their full academic and emotional potential.
  • Create a community where well-being is a priority and where everyone can feel included.
  • They make visible and “normalize” the need for students to ask for support, whether academic, emotional, mental, or of any other kind.
  • They support students beyond their academic experience and create a better overall experience.
  •

Of course, all these services must be visible and easily accessible to students. And they must be genuinely implemented, used by the community, not just for show and to contribute to a superficial image (social-washing, rainbow-washing, etc.).
